The change of your door lock is a simple and inexpensive method to increase the security of your home. However, this procedure is not for all. It requires a certain amount of patience and skill.
You need to replace the cylinder that is located within the knob's body. The cylinder is what recognizes the key when it's placed into the window lock repairs.
Take off the lock that was previously used.
The first step to replace the door window lock repair cost is to get rid of the lock that was previously in use. It's a fairly simple process, however there are some things to keep in mind. The first step is to take off the handle or knob in the event that one is present and then remove the trim that is attached to the base of the lock cylinder by using the help of a screwdriver. After the trim has been removed, you can take off the screws holding the cylinder in position with the flathead. The cylinder is then gently removed from the door.
Be sure to take measurements of the length of the new cylinder before installing it. Measure the distance from the center to the left and right sides of the cylinder using an instrument. Then, you can purchase an additional cylinder using the same measurements. This will stop the cylinder from snapping, which can happen when the door is kicked in or when the key is stuck inside.
Install the replacement cylinder into the door and then turn the key. This will align the cylinder with your carrier which is typically on the outside of your lock. Installing a new lock
Start by measuring the width of your door if you are replacing a lock that is already in use. Most residential locksets have a thickness of 3/8 inch to 1 3/4 inches. If your door is more than 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 inches, you'll need an extra thick door kit. This would include longer screws and either an extended spindle extension or the tail piece for door knobs.
Most locks come with a detailed instruction booklet to guide you through the installation of the new hardware. Be sure to read the instructions thoroughly prior to beginning the process to ensure that you are following all of the necessary steps. The manual will also provide you with an idea of the degree of skill required to perform the task. If you're replacing a lock for the first time, you might consider asking a more experienced person for help.
Before installing the new lock, it's an excellent idea to put tape over the openings of the old hardware. This will prevent the screws from slipping out of the holes and protect any tile you might have put in the area. This will also protect your tiles from any damage caused by rust, dirt and grime. If the new lock comes with a latch bolt, fit the new latch bolt into the upper cross bore. Make sure you put it in the correct position, which will be indicated by an arrow. Then, screw the latch plate onto the bolt.
Screw the deadbolt to the door jamb. Test the deadbolt by throwing it a few times to ensure that it is extended all the way to the strike plate and is secure.
