Size
The Joovy Kooper X2 is a side-by-side double stroller that can hold two children up to 50 lbs each. The seats are larger than other lightweight double strollers and the canopy is fitted with large SPF 50 sunshades with peekaboo windows. Other key features include cup holders with one parent and a large, self-standing bin that can accommodate up to 25 lbs; swing-away bars for children to get into and out of their seats; and the front wheels that swivel lock for better manoeuvrability on tough terrain. This is a great option for urban and suburban families. It is also newborn ready with the double kit which includes the newborn's wedgie to ensure the perfect lie-flat position.
Weight
The weight of a double buggy (zzb.Bz) is one of the most important factors that determine its ease to push. Typically, a light buggy is easier to lift and carry however, it may not have the suspension to deal with bumps and uneven terrain.
Make sure to read the specifications of each model carefully before purchasing. Some double buggies have a maximum seat weight while others have a frame limit. Some double buggies are able to be folded with seats removed, making them smaller and lighter. This is helpful if you are limited on storage space.
The tri-fold doubles tend to be the lightest of models since only one hand is needed to lift the bottom and back sections. They are also narrower than side by side buggies and can be accessed through the majority of doorways. The iCandy Geo 3 is one of the lightest tri-fold doubles on the market. It can comfortably accommodate twins or a toddler and baby.
Tandem buggies are perfect for families with growing children since they begin as a single stroller but can be adapted to accommodate a second seat, car seat or carrycot. Some, like the iCandy Orange offer over 30 different seating options, so they can expand with your family, even up to a 3rd child. They are generally heavier than tri-fold doubles. However, they're usually easier to move between kerbs due to the weight being evenly distributed.
Folding
The best double buggies for small children fold in a matter of minutes. Our Lab experts appreciate this feature because it lets them squeeze the buggies into the back of their cars and free up storage space when not in use. The Joovy Kooper X2 for example comes with straps that can be pulled up on the seats and then the whole thing folds down. Even our oldest testers could do the tri-fold with only one hand.
The light Delta Children LX side by side is a great option for double buggies. Its light weight is a plus but also the features it has big pop-out canopy that come with SPF 50 protection as well as a the peek-a-boo window and swing-away bars that help little ones to get into and out of their seats; and reclining chair and leg rests for toddlers.
Manoeuvrability
One of the most important aspects to consider when choosing a small double buggy is its manoeuvrability, particularly how it is easy to move around with both children on board. Some pushchairs are better than others such as the iCandy Orange's "cinema chair" (where the back is elevated).
This is where narrow tandem buggies as well as side-by-side designs can be handy. However, they are more substantial overall and can be tricky to navigate through doorways.
The UPPAbaby Vista 2 pushchair is a great example, as it's a narrow model that allows for two additional seats and - most importantly - the pillion board, which can be used to accommodate a third child.
Other smaller, three-wheeled models such as the phil&teds Dot are also incredibly agile, especially thanks to its clever 'dot kit' that turns it into an inline buggie. It has two different seating arrangements for children of various ages and the front seat can be rotated to face the parents to provide more intimate bonding.
